Shoe Blog: Altra, ON, Karhu

Ever wonder what else is out there? We've added three new additions to our store. Each shoe is innovative in its technology and keeps you, the athlete, inspired to explore your sport.

Altra

Altra is one of the more technical shoe brands out there. They specialize in Zero Drop shoes and are known for having great cushioning. Zero Drop refers to how your foot sits within the shoe. Usually in most running shoes your heel is elevated compared to your toes. In an Altra, your heel and toes are resting at the same level which provides level cushioning and great weight balance from heel to forefoot. This natural balance aligns the feet, back, and body posture for less impact. It also strengthens the Achilles and lower calf muscles that are engaged more than when your foot is in a traditional elevated heel drop running shoe.  The other thing you’ll notice when you put on an Altra is the spacious toe box. They call this the FootShape toe box. What they’ve done is give you an untapered toe box to allow the foot more space to splay naturally and this actually allows for the foot to have better stability and a more powerful toe-off. If you’ve always wanted to run like you’re barefoot, but with some cushioning and support, then definitely try these out.

ON Running has developed a truly unique technology with the Cloudtec cushioning system. These shoes focus on reducing as much as possible but still offer superior cushioning and support.  Once on the ground, the Clouds lock firm to provide a solid foundation for a natural and powerful takeoff. This culminates in something unique: the first running shoe that provides cushioning only when you need it. So you can have the best of both worlds: cushioned landing, barefoot takeoff. All of this combined creates some amazing, extremely lightweight and fun shoes.

Karhu

Last but not least is our first Fleet Feet exclusive brand Karhu! They are a Finnish brand that has over 100 years of history behind them. Throughout their history they have always been known for being innovators in running. In 1970, they actually came out with the first “Air Cushion” midsole system. While gaining popularity in the 1980s amongst other brands they actually discontinued its use in favor of their Fulcrum midsole because, as they put it, running is about moving forward not up and down. This Fulcrum tech still is in place today in their most recent models. It is designed to lessen the heel strike by bringing the midfoot and forefoot closer to the ground upon landing which helps to avoid a firm heel strike. This leads to increased stability by focusing the runner’s forces forward which reduces pressure and pronation in the stance or stabilization stage of the gait; all of this culminates in allowing the calf muscles to create greater forward force which helps prevent a high bounce between steps.

We always research and test the products we bring in, and these three shoes have received high praise from gym lovers to distance runners. Come by and try them on!
